There Is / There Are: Statements
We use 'there is/are' to say that something exists or is present.
RULE
Singular: There is (There's) + a/an + noun
Plural: There are + noun (plural)
TIP
Use 'is' for one thing, 'are' for more than one thing — even though the noun comes right after.
EXAMPLES
  • There is a swimming pool at the house.
  • There are lots of movie stars at the party.
  • There's a train on the road!

RULE
Question: Is / Are there + noun?
Negative: There isn't / There aren't + noun
TIP
Answer short questions with 'Yes, there is/are' or 'No, there isn't/aren't' — don't repeat the whole sentence.
EXAMPLES
  • Is there a train coming? Yes, there is.
  • Are there any policemen near you? No, there aren't.
  • There isn't another car on this road.
